Recently, my cousin took me back to my childhood, with a picture of a truck loaded with watermelons. My grandfather was a farmer and raised animals, vegetables, and fruit, including of course watermelon. He always knew how to pick the ones that were ripe to sweet perfection. He'd say it was all in the thud.
