In a world of so much hype – it’s easy to be skeptical when people tell you to go see this movie or go read this book. Yada, Yada… well, this movie, UNCONDITIONAL, was sooo good.

A real tear jerker and heart-felt movie. 5 stars!

It’s a faith-based film – but not cheesy or “preachy.”

Though this was the first major movie from Harbinger Media Parnters (without the major studio budget), I was blown away by the quality. Great scenes on film, good dialog, believable characters – and perfect casting.

I love Michael Ealy. (The main male character pictured here). I hope he gets nominated for something with the role he played.

Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be.

Who is inspiring the youth in your neighborhood?

Whoever does the inspiring becomes the role models

and everyone else becomes spectators.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Typically good movies like this are books first – usually bestsellers are turned into movies, like The Secrets Life of Bees or Waiting to Exhale or The Color Purple. But this movie was done first – and then the author wrote the novel! How cool is that?

And guess what? I met the author! Eva Marie Everson. We were both speaking at the Maranatha’s Christian Writers Conference and she told me the story.

(And you know the book is always better than the movie – can you imagine?) OMG!

God is really doing something here.

The novel in a nutshell, which was released September 1, 2012, (same time as the movie): Samantha Crawford, an acclaimed storybook artist, seemingly had it all until losing the love she cherished most. Now fighting despair, she is obsessed with tracking down the murderer of her husband. With no leads and no hope, Sam prepares to take her life until providence intervenes and she is reunited with her childhood friend, Joe Bradford.

Dying of kidney disease, Joe spends his last days serving fatherless children in an under resourced community. Observing Papa Joe’s tireless love for “his kids,” Sam begins to find new purpose until she comes face to face with her heart’s desire. The innocence and hope of a child competes with the lure of revenge in an effort to show Sam how, even in life’s darkest of circumstances, Love is above all.

Don’t sleep on this – you’ll miss the blessing.

Now, I love movie, the actors, the book – but wait there’s more! I love the mission. Because this is more than just entertainment, this is a purpose-driven endeavor.

UNCONDITIONAL is More Than A Movie, it’s a call to ACT! UNCONDITIONAL is partnering with ministries serving at-risk children and youth in communities all across the country.
You have to:

Be clear on your message. Have a mission, a calling – deliver that passion via blogs, videos, podcasts and by speaking to group and organizations.
Package your brand. You can’t be haphazard about it. Be very strategic. A brand is more than a logo, it is your vision, mission translated in various forms so your audience “gets you” and knows what to expect when they experience you.

Today, for authors to get a book deal or even an agent, they need more than a good book idea or a great manuscript, they must:

1. Have a marketing mindset

2. Have a strong personal brand online

3. Have a national author platform

4. Be willing to be relentless in promotion

Of course you start out with a great product. That’s a given. There are tons of resources to help you learn how to write better and conferences to attend.

But I want to be straight forward, there is no “silver bullet” or magic pill that will instantly get you to the top of the best sellers lists. It takes work. It takes time. It takes lots of prayer.

Know your audience – inside and out. Beyond what they are, but what problems do they have – and how you can help them. Know where they are hanging out online and offline. What media do they consume and who do they admire. How do you gain their trust.

Knowing your niche, interacting with them and creating regular content – these are the elements that will help you sell books.

Don’t just post on Facebook and Twitter all day “buy my book.” That’s a quick way to get “unfollowed” and “unfriended.” Instead, engage with your ideal audience, offer advice, give value and be CONSISTENT.

Yes, publicity will help – but you can’t get media attention if you don’t have the above elements. Just like baking a cake, you need all the right ingredients – skipping one of them will not deliver the results you’re looking for.

So, if you are a visionary who is serious about escalating your brand equity, strengthening market position and widening reputation cloud with creative content strategies, apply for the PR 2.0 and Platform Building Bootcamp.
I learned that lesson BIG TIME.

I felt like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy wasn’t in Kansas anymore

– she had entered a new land and was searching for the Yellow Brick Road.

yellow brick road

What happens when you have a great idea, a plan, a new venture – a new partner (gulp) and you’re ready to rock this thing – BUT you hit a brick wall?

All that glitters ain’t always gold. I learned that lesson BIG TIME.

I felt like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy wasn’t in Kansas anymore

– she had entered a new land and was searching for the Yellow Brick Road.

Her adventure led to discover that there was no “Wizard of Oz” that could help her. What she realized was she already had everything she needed – it was already inside of her.

Dang! What did I miss? Somebody should’ve told me. I had the answers with me all the time.

My brand was about to be diluted and stolen in the land of “slick words, tech savvy” wizardry.

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!

I was seeking another level in my business but not listening to GOD and I got into trouble.

It’s like the Lion not knowing he had courage, or the Tin Man not knowing he had heart or the Scarecrow not knowing he had the smarts. God had given me capacity, the experiences, the wisdom to do everything I needed – on my own.

But I missed it. I partnered with the wrong person – and he was telling me things that were contrary to my brand and using “internet marketing” tricks he learned over the years.

You know I’m not against technology, marketing or salesmanship but prayer is FIRST.

Listening in the “still small voice,” I should have paid attention to the RED FLAGS.

Jeremiah warned: “Behold, you trust in lying words that cannot profit” (Jeremiah 7:8).

Lessons learned:

Trust can never be bought. No matter how convincing your “sales” copy or long sales letters are, you can never buy trust – it is earned. People BUY on impulse – but they become real customers through relationship. Reputations take time to build but can be destroyed overnight.

Do not let anyone tell you that what you’re doing is wrong – if you’ve been doing it that way and have had a successful brand for years. It may be that they just want to “hijack” your brand and steal what you’ve been doing for years.

Never be intimidated by those who know technology better than you. Just because they can throw up a flashy website and write some sizzling copy, doesn’t mean you don’t know how to connect with YOUR customer and how to SERVE them.

Just because a person talks a good game – doesn’t mean they really know how to deliver. This is the main lesson I learned that almost cost me my business, my reputation and my brand. When you are a trustworthy person, you pretty much assume other people will walk in integrity too. Oh, my, was I ever wrong.

After I realized my “mistake” for getting into a BAD partnership, my first question I asked myself was how did I let this happen? I have worked hard to build my brand and my reputation in the Christian book market helping authors with their publicity and helping churches with their ministry marketing. Many have copied me – but this is the first time anyone has tried to take over everything.

How could I let this happen?

Oh, the “partnership” was fine for a while. But then when everything was to get on track for the clients, it wasn’t going right. Something was NOT clicking.

Clients were not happy. Promises were not being fulfilled. All talk. No action. And the other person went into hiding – and a series of “half truths” began to surface.

Not good. I am in business to serve not swindle.

I believe God gave me the vision for Ministry Marketing Solutions and Pam Perry PR to help others “market their message.” That has not changed. That is who I am – to the core. God has anointed and appointed me to run this business – not to hand it over to someone who has learned some saucy sales techniques or greedy motives.

Do you know we serve a God that gives us the answer at the beginning? It’s in us.

If God gives you the vision, He’ll give your provision. All we have to do is have the heart, courage and wisdom to step up and do it.

But you know what? I’m not mad. I just have to repent and change. And if I had not went through what I did, I would have even dared to change for the better. See the new Pam at www.PamPerryPR.com

I have a sign near my desk that says, “Adjust or Self-destruct.” It reminds me to stay fluid. Don’t get depressed when things don’t work out – just keep it moving. Ask God for direction and be willing to do the work! He will work it out, all things will work together for good.

I have to apologize to anyone who has been following me for a period of time and seen how my brand almost got “hijacked.” There was a lot of “brand confusion” going on. Sorry about that.

I will never compromise my brand again.

What about you? Has anything like this ever happened to you?

How did you handle it?

This Scripture really came to life for me:

It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. Psalm 118:8

Social media is about many things: engagement, story-telling, and relationships -but mainly, as of today, SEO. It’s all about the SEARCH.

Can you be found – out of all the clutter and messaging, is your content optimized
where your ideal audience (and those who are interested in your subject) can find you?

When they “google” you to check you out, are they finding enough information
to cure the curiosity and build their trust. CONTENT IS KING. Old content, new
content and everything in between. It’s like feeding a hungry animal – CONTENT
is the Search Engines FOOD.

It’s all about social proof. People want to see how many friends, fans, and followers
you have. They want to see how many views, likes or “thumbs up.”

It matters.
It is the new marketing method and corporations are paying attention…big time.

In social media, people want to see you engaging and being relevant. They want to
see a real HUMAN – not an ad, not a brand, not an automated tweet or status update.

That’s why some companies “don’t get” social media. They think of it as another
advertising channel or broadcast media vehicle. It is not.

Social media is powerful – and it cannot really be controlled. It is strategic -
but it is not like public relations – it is dynamic and forever moving. “The people”
determine validity of your online presence. Your message will go viral if you
connect – and are consistent – and provide VALUABLE content. Remarkable
content – that’s what gets shared. The more you share, the more people care.

Bottom line:
The purpose of social media is communication – and to connect the
message with the people. The messaging is filtered and tailored from
the communications strategy – but it is fluid – and well, social.

So, yes, social media is a great way to promote, brand and build
awareness – but it first has to be “noticed” and the search engines
will find you – and people will share you…and YOU will get MEDIA.

The more often you share and engage, the more “traction” you’ll receive.

The SEARCH is always on.

Building backlinks is what SEO lives for
and lives online forever.

If someone had asked me 20 years ago what my life would be when I turned 50, the answer wouldn’t be the life I’m living now. I was living in Los Angeles with husband #1 (yes, this is #3 for me), going to school to become a cosmetologist and enjoying the California life.

That was 1992, boy things are different now. I have matured, been through enough life lessons to write 3 books and have remarried again. I’ve had two babies, lost both my parents, a sister and brother, purchased my first home, lost 180 pounds, married and divorced husband #2, quit my job, moved to St Louis, became a work at home mom, started blogging and as you read this blog packing to move back to my hometown because we couldn’t sell our house. I also learned to let go and let God handle things that overwhelm me.

I met my husband at Sam’s Club. He was dressed in his military uniform, and quite handsome. He was following me in the store and actually asked me if I thought he was a stalker! I’m thinking yes and you are in the military. Two strikes against him. We exchanged numbers, but I really wasn’t interested in a relationship with a military man that was in town for 12-24 months. He pursued me, I enjoyed the chase and I finally gave in after he convinced me to just give him a chance. I did and the rest is history, we got married on May 17th, what would have been his mother’s 80th birthday.

I’m right in the thick of this life change. It is not pretty or kind, I have days that I honestly think I’m gonna lose my complete mind. My husband understands what I’m going through, but he also avoids me at times. And he should, it can be scary.

That’s right, I’m 50 and fabulous. Let’s see what the next 20 years bring. My journey continues….

Oh, I love my family…. it’s just that I want so much more for them.

From year to year, not much changes for folks.

They are still “broke, busted and disgusted” and talking junk.

It’s good to see them – but I really want to jump up on the

table and yell: WAKE UP!!!! GET OUT OF YOUR BOX!

This is what I would say, if they would receive it:

Do your utmost. Strive for excellence. Make a difference.

But first you got to get out of the box and stop trying to put folks in one!

It’s time for a break out!

Here are some box-breaking-out strategies:

1.) TAKE RISKS. Get out of that “comfort zone”. Don’t be so afraid of making errors that you never try anything new. As the old goes, “I’d rather try and fail than never have tried at all.” Don’t settle for less that God’s best.

2.) BE BOLD. God has a good plan for your life (Jerm. 29:11). Place confidence in Him. First have faith then take that leap!

Believing and trusting God is the foundation to knowing you are more than a conqueror and you can do all things through Christ. We all learned the Sunday school lesson, now it’s time to get UP and live up. What are we afraid of?

3.) BE ORIGINAL. Don’t follow the crowd; follow your heart. Your creative energy comes from Creator. Honor God. Turn off the TV and be still. Read a book. Pay attention.

God is trying to give you divine ideas and strategies to think out the box and stop this “boxed in living.”

No matter what is boxing us in, the key to freedom is living your dreams. At the very least, dream some dreams!

We were created to live an abundant life, not mediocre, comatose, bitter ones.

There are valuable treasures inside each of us. Genius potential. It’s all inside.

Now, go open up your “box” and Go get it!

Remember the movie, “Julie & Julia?”

She was so excited when she got a comment! Yes, it’s a good feeling. You’ve got fans!

Lady Gaga calls herself “the luckiest girl on earth” because she has fans.

Comments mean people are reading!

(And if enough people read it, Lifetime could turn your blog into a mini-series) Right?

Well, here’s how to give your blog a boost to keep YOU happy at least.

First, you have to reel in the readers. So the title matters. Questions are one of the best ways to write a blog title and the simplest.

Write a title of one specific question to one specific audience and answer it. (Like above)

Which means you must narrow your slant or focus your information for your audience. Write like you’re talking to a friend. One friend – not a crowd.

You can later rewrite similar content for a different audience. Don’t try to put so much in one blog post. It doesn’t stick as well. Keep it simple.

Here’s a template to help you with your blog:

Blog step 1- Choose a title that works for tips. Everyone loves tips. People don’t read, they can on the web. So make sure you list out tips. But first find a topic that works for tips.
Blog Step 2- Outline your topic. Your target audience wants their questions answered – that’s why they’re on the web searching for answers.
Blog step 3 - Write a one-two sentence hook or introduction. In journalism it’s called a lead. If you don’t catch them at the beginning – you have lost them. Write a strong lead, hook, intro to your topic.
Blog Step 4 - Include four to six sub points in outline form. This helps you clarify. The more clarity you have the better the post.
Blog step 5 - Write each paragraph to support each sub point. This is the meat of your blog. This is where your creativity will shine. This is also reason why people are reading into your copy. Offer some real answers – give away some great advice, ideas, examples, links or stories.
Blog step 6 - Write only two or three short sentences for each paragraph. Make it easy on the eyes to read (remember people are scanning). So make short sentences. The best writers write with brevity.
Blog step 7- Create three to five paragraphs from each heading. Here you know the drill. Just like Twitter only allows 140 characters. For your blog to flow, only write 3 to 5 paragraphs per heading.
Blog Step 8 - Finish with a one or two sentence conclusion. People will rarely remember the middle, kinda remember the lead – but they will remember the close. Just like in speeches. So make your blog post end with a bang. Something actionable. Something worth commenting on.
Finally, Share your blog URLs on twitter, facebook, google+ and linkedin at the end of the post to encourage social sharing.
Know the biggest benefit to strategic blog marketing means that Google will find your blogs – and that means more traffic. More traffic is what we all want.

Question: What has helped you get your rhythm to rock your blog?

Or do you have “bloggers block?”

I confess, I get that too sometimes. That’s when I head to Starbucks…

Hopefully this post will help UNBLOCK – because serious bloggers blog often. Right?

No, this is not a test. This is the real deal. It’s called life and the daily grind of almost every mother in America.

This is the meltdown hour. We pray for patience and we get more trials like this. NOT funny, Lord.

If Jesus can speak to the wind and it be still, certainly we can have peace in our own home!

Is it possible to get sanity in this hectic rush hour at home?

Yes, and it doesn’t require rocket science or cashing in your life savings to learn the how to get some peace.

Use these stress management steps for yourself and your family to maintain peace in an otherwise chaotic phase of your day.

1. Connect, Hug and Love. Some days, by the time the kids get off the bus or walk home from school, then do their homework and play with their friends, a lot of time has passed. You then realize that you didn’t connect with your kids, much less discuss important happenings during the course of the day.

When my daughter was in elementary school, I made time to give her my undivided attention. I look her in the eyes and ask her about her day. Most times she says the usual “it was okay” or a shrug. But I make an effort to ask. We sit and chat for about 10 or 15 minutes. This is enough to change the gears of your busy little guy or girl.

2. The media, The mind, The message. Why are some kids so crazy? Because of all the stuff on television and in videos. Overuse and unsupervised viewing is hazardous to your child’s health. If garbage gets in, garbage comes out. Set some limits. Use the TV sparingly like when they are arguing with each other or just need to recharge batteries by being still.

If you do let them watch TV, let toddlers and preschoolers enjoy a Disney or education video, while older children can tune into a family movie. Screen what your kids are watching. It helps in their character development. Remember their minds are like a sponge. Put on some positive stuff. You are the MOM.

3. Recharge with a snack. Many of the stress moments we face during the course of our busy day are caused by low blood sugar. Check to see the last time they had a snack. Kids get rundown too and need a lift. So, while they are awaiting dinner, head off the whining with snacks of raisins, or crackers, or fruit. Keep it simple. And while you’re at it, get one for yourself.

4. Peace be still. The kids have been hugged, entertained, and given a small snack, and they’re still at it! If the boys were out playing basketball, and they girls were riding bikes down the street, they may be just hot and thirsty.

Ease them into a cool down by providing a bottle of water from the fridge and have them sit and catch their breathe with you. Wisdom! Amazing how refreshing this can feel to a tired (and hungry) kiddo!

5. Waiting to Exhale and Meditate. This one is for you. Dust off the Lamaze childbirth books and practice deep breathing. Put on some soothing music, light a candle and meditate. Release the toxins from the day by exhaling through your mouth. Speak positive affirmations or sing a gospel tune.

This works for teenagers too, if you could actually get them to try it. Set the tone of your home during this transition time by listening to quiet, positive music. CeCe Winans or Yolanda Adams would work. This is not time for Li’l Wayne.

If the above tips do not work, put yourself in time-out by locking yourself in the bathroom.

Style recommendations: the boldness of this blue can be scary and overpowering if not done correctly, so our recommendation is to start small and balance the “pop” with a neutral like camel or black. For men, you’ll see this color in your ties, pocket squares and socks. For contrast, wear it with a lighter color – for trendiness, opt for this color in lace or leather – for sophistication, try cobalt blue with a demure, flowy blouse

Remember when we needed shoebox after shoebox to store our pictures? I would spend hours putting my pictures in order and using index cards to create dividers. Now that many of us have digital cameras, we need to take control of our digital picture organization.

I decided very early on that I was going to need a system for all my digital pictures. Because we are not limited by the film, we take hundreds of pictures instead of just 12, 24, or 36. The best system is the one that you will be able to keep up with. I’m going to show you the system I use and you can choose to use what fits for you.

From Camera to Server

Here is the process I go through:

1. I set up my digital camera to use the date when naming the photos. I figure the date is the best way to try to find pictures. If I want pictures of my oldest when he was born, I know to go to the July, 1996 photos.

2. As I’m taking pictures, if one really does not turn out, I delete it on my camera if I have time. If not, I skip this step.

3. I upload my pictures to my server on a weekly basis. I’ll discuss the folder organization I use in a moment. I go through and fix any pictures that are sideways and delete ones that didn’t turn out at all.

4. Once uploaded, I open the photos up in Adobe Photoshop Elements (check out that link because you will see a video of my family & how I manage taking daily photos) and I make any obvious adjustments that I see like red eye, too dark or a pole behind a head.

5. The photos are then backed up to a second hard drive in case the first one fails and I also upload all my pictures to Flickr as a third backup. I pay for the premium version so I have unlimited uploads.

Folder Organization

All of my pictures from 2003 and earlier are in a folder called Family Photos. I also have a few other random folders that I have created as I worked on projects and needed more photos.

The earlier years, I have in decades because I do not have as many photos. Those photos were all scanned from print photos. Inside the decades, I have the years and in some cases, I’m not sure exactly what years, so I group them.

For the years 2004 and beyond, I have in a separate folder because they are all in my main Photoshop Elements catalog. I have a lot more digital photos from the later years, so each year has it’s own folder.

And inside each year, I have it broken down by the dates the photos are taken. In a few cases, I have the name of the event if it is something I needed to gather everyone’s photos in one place.

The Raw Files folder is where I put all the raw files for my photos. I don’t always shoot in raw, but sometimes I do and they are all in that folder.

As I said earlier, this system may not work for you, but having a system in place will make it easier to find your photos when you need them. It isn’t too late to start.

What digital photo organization system do you use?
